A "friendly" band contest took place on Saturday, 30th June, at Kirkby Stephen, with Muker Silver Band taking part, alongside 5 other bands. Cups were to be awarded for Best March, Best Hymn, Best Programme overall and a cup to be awarded at the judges' discretion.
Playing in a marquee at Kirkby Stephen Rugby Club, the contest was opened by Gretton Band, who are twinned with Kirkby Stephen Band. Their programme was well received by the other bands and audience, who were enjoying some warm sunshine (before the inevitable showers!).
Bands taking part alongside Muker were Kirkby Stephen, Penrith, Appleby and Sedbergh bands. Gretton Band brought with them a cup to be presented for the Best Selection, although not all bands knew beforehand.
The cup at the discretion of the judges was presented to the young tuba player of Appleby Band, who acquitted himself well in front of a discerning audience.
Muker Band, playing Blaenwern, won the cup for Best Hymn, while Sedbergh played very well, winning Best Selection,...
