A tremendous blow to the upper Swaledale community, the King's Head in Gunnerside will be closing on 6th November. As can be imagined, this will be a huge disappointment to locals and visitors alike; current leaseholders, Paddy and Paula, have been instrumental in changing the fortunes of this lively local pub since they took over a couple of years ago. There have been many, many glowing reports of the friendly welcome, the great freshly-cooked food, the lovely Dales atmosphere, not to mention the high-profile attention given to the unique doggy beer and menu! There is general talk of creating a community pub, although this is complicated by the building requiring some repairs and renovation. What is needed is a community leader to spearhead the campaign to make the King's Head into a community pub, as has been successfully done at Hudswell. Is there any interested, resourceful person who might be prepared to take this task on?  It is not only locals who will be devastated by the loss of this pub, but also the...

Saturday, 8th December, 7.30pm:
"Tortoise in Love". A feel-good film, this romantic comedy is about Tom, a gardener who moves at a lethargic pace when it comes to love. But when he falls insatiably for gorgeous Polish au pair Anya, the entire village gives him the push he needs to win her heart. This was a truly homegrown film effort, in which most of the population of an Oxfordshire village was involved. Young mums helped with the sales and publicity, retirees provided the drivers and props, the WI organised the catering, and all the cast and crew were lodged in the village for the duration of the shoot.
Quiz and refreshments from 7pm.  Tickets £5 on the door, further information from David Crapper 01748 886325.

Muker Show 2012 At last, we had a fine, sunny day which became a brilliant day. Muker Sliver Band were on top form and didn’t have to wear their anoraks or wipe rain from their instruments. Our gate numbers were up and people came to the show from far and wide, including Isle of Mull, Belfast, Cornwall, East Anglia and then even further afield, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Nepal, Brazil, USA and Australia. We had a thrilling senior fell race and a little ‘Usain Bolt’ paid us a visit in the children’s fancy dress. Two film crews were round and about covering items for The Dales programme and a new programme called Keep Cooking and Carry On. Despite the terrible weather we have had this year which affected the horticulture entries, this was compensated for by the increase in product entries. We were very fortunate to see a display of Maypole Dancing by Reeth & Gunnerside School, everyone enjoyed the display and we have received many positive comments about the wonderful entries by the school children. Thank you...

A "friendly"  band contest took place on Saturday, 30th June, at Kirkby Stephen, with Muker Silver Band taking part, alongside 5 other bands. Cups were to be awarded for Best March, Best Hymn, Best Programme overall and a cup to be awarded at the judges' discretion. Playing in a marquee at Kirkby Stephen Rugby Club, the contest was opened by Gretton Band, who are twinned with Kirkby Stephen Band. Their programme was well received by the other bands and audience, who were enjoying some warm sunshine (before the inevitable showers!). Bands taking part alongside Muker were Kirkby Stephen, Penrith, Appleby and Sedbergh bands. Gretton Band brought with them a cup to be presented for the Best Selection, although not all bands knew beforehand. The cup at the discretion of the judges was presented to the young tuba player of Appleby Band, who acquitted himself well in front of a discerning audience. Muker Band, playing Blaenwern, won the cup for Best Hymn, while Sedbergh played very well, winning Best Selection,...

Muker Silver Band played two well-received concerts on Friday 25th and Monday 28th May, as part of the renowned Swaledale Festival. A varied programme, ranging from Rossini to Madness, was enthusiastically welcomed by the audience at Muker Public Hall. Duncan Bythell, the conductor, had a few interesting words about each of the pieces and the band demonstrated their versatility and talent, with three pieces showcasing solos by cornet, trombone and euphonium players.

The band have a busy year ahead, including a local band contest at Kirkby Stephen on Saturday, 30th June, the popular Wine Party at Muker Public Hall, Friday, 31st August and concerts at Richmond and Hawes churches.
