BBC Countryfile magazine has voted the Yorkshire Dales the winner of its annual poll on National Parks of the Year. Readers showed fondness for the spectacular landscape, with its hay meadows, stone villages and iconic barns (although the barns are, in fact, "cow'usses"; cow- and hoghouses).
The award was welcomed by the chair of the National Park Authority, Carl Lis, who called it "an excellent result for the Yorkshire Dales." The award is an incentive to visitors to visit this most wonderful part of the world, and Mr Lis added, "Residents should afford themselves a pat on the back, for helping to manage the land."
