Gunnerside Diamond Jubilee celebrations took place today with the unveiling of a specially commissioned piece of artwork by local blacksmith, Stephen Calvert. Well supported by the local community and visitors who braved the cool weather, the Diamond Jubilee Rose Arch was officially revealed by Stephen’s father, Jim Calvert.

Jim made a witty speech (including wondering where the celebrity who might usually be expected to cut the ribbon on such an occasion might have got lost!), which also paid tribute to the longevity of the Queen and the local community spirit. Muker Silver Band played some patriotic tunes, including “Swaledale” and fruit punch was served.

The Rose Arch itself is situated on the grassy island in the middle of Gunnerside and is decorated (designed by Stephen himself) with two white roses of Yorkshire. Two climbing roses were planted at the ceremony and it was noted that Mr Miller, from Gunnerside Estate, had kindly sent down two planters of flowers to further adorn the island....
