A tremendous blow to the upper Swaledale community, the King's Head in Gunnerside will be closing on 6th November. As can be imagined, this will be a huge disappointment to locals and visitors alike; current leaseholders, Paddy and Paula, have been instrumental in changing the fortunes of this lively local pub since they took over a couple of years ago. There have been many, many glowing reports of the friendly welcome, the great freshly-cooked food, the lovely Dales atmosphere, not to mention the high-profile attention given to the unique doggy beer and menu!
There is general talk of creating a community pub, although this is complicated by the building requiring some repairs and renovation. What is needed is a community leader to spearhead the campaign to make the King's Head into a community pub, as has been successfully done at Hudswell.
